Our only single-day programme that crosses into a second country. Over the Danube at Giurgiu–Ruse to the Ivanovo Rock-Hewn Churches, a UNESCO World Heritage site where 13th and 14th-century frescoes survive in chapels cut into the cliffs of the Rusenski Lom valley. Then Ruse itself, the "Little Vienna of the Danube," for its Belle Époque squares and Holy Trinity Cathedral. Lunch is Bulgarian — shopska salad, kavarma, pitka bread. Sedan car, English-speaking guide-driver, entrance fees and lunch included.
